Description

This flavorful green bean casserole is a classic dish that combines tender green beans with a creamy mushroom sauce and crispy onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups green beans (trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • 1 can (10 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste salt and black pepper
  • 1 cup crispy fried onions (divided)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for extra richness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beans: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). If you’re using fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water for about 4–5 minutes until they’re just tender, then transfer them to an ice bath. This helps them keep their vibrant green color and crisp-tender texture. If you’re using frozen green beans, simply thaw and drain them well.
  2. Mix the Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, and a dash of salt and pepper. Stir until smooth and creamy. If you’re adding shredded cheese, mix that in now too—it gives the casserole a rich, gooey twist that cheese lovers will appreciate.
  3. Assemble the Casserole: Add the green beans and half of the crispy fried onions into the sauce mixture. Gently fold everything together so the beans are evenly coated in the creamy mixture.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Spoon the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly. Bake for 25 minutes, then carefully remove the dish and sprinkle the remaining crispy onions over the top. Return it to the oven and bake for another 5–10 minutes until the top is golden and crisp.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Let the casserole sit for a few minutes before serving—it’ll thicken slightly as it cools. The creamy sauce, tender green beans, and crispy onion topping make every bite absolutely irresistible.
